“For the lips of a priest should keep knowledge,
And people should seek the law from his mouth;
For he is the messenger of the Lord of hosts.”-Malachi 2:7, NKJV
Seeking help from a pastor in situations of infidelity is different than seeking help from a therapist.
This verse from Malachi 2–ironically, before the infamous passage on divorce–highlights this difference. People came to the priests for knowledge of God’s law.
How does God see this situation? What is right and wrong according to God?
This is the wheelhouse of a pastor or priest. We ought to be able to speak to this, or we are failing our profession.
It ought not be difficult to call adultery sin. This is obviously God’s stance on the matter. In fact, God labels adultery evil (see Deut. 22:22).
For too long, pastors have abdicated their proper roll in these matters. They have shied away from declaring the truth about God’s law on the matter of adultery.
We need to speak up as the sheep need our voice. God has called us to speak up and instruct His people in righteousness. That includes condemning and taking adultery seriously!
