When a man hath taken a wife, and married her, and it come to pass that she find no favour in his eyes, because he hath found some uncleanness in her: then let him write her a bill of divorcement, and give it in her hand, and send her out of his house. And when she is departed out of his house, she may go and be another man’s wife.
-Deuteronomy 24:1-2, KJV
Clearly, the man who divorces his wife in this passage is still alive when remarriage is on the table for the divorced wife.
The passage goes on from here to prohibit remarriage to the original husband after the wife has remarried another man in between. It assumes remarriage after divorce as a norm.
This is something I think makes little sense with those claiming to be biblical as it comes to divorce and remarriage.
The Bible is clear here about that remarriage is assumed when divorce is involved. That is the norm.
It is very odd to think one could get a divorce and then be prohibited from remarriage while the ex-spouse still lives. Such a position really is simply a denial of divorce by another name. The position still binds the divorced spouse to the spouse as they are still married.
If you are not allowed to remarry while your spouse lives, are you really divorced?
I would say not.
The clear teachings in the Bible suggest that when we are talking about biblical divorce we are also talking about the freedom to remarry. One is implied with the other.
Thank you for clarification on this. I got sucked into the vortex/nonsense by other Christian blogs/vlogs that remarriage to another after divorce due to adultery was still considered sin (I mean in the sense of the wronged party finding happiness and remarrying). I sat in shame because I didn’t cause my ex husband to cheat on me and then confused as to being shamed into remarriage and what God wants for me.
