Breaking the Golden Rule

For this, “Thou shalt not commit adultery, Thou shalt not kill, Thou shalt not steal, Thou shalt not bear false witness, Thou shalt not covet;” and if there be any other commandment, it is briefly comprehended in this saying, namely, “Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.”

-Romans 13:9, KJV (quotation marks and emphasis mine)

Cheaters break the most basic and common of human moral codes:

They break the Golden Rule.

“The Golden Rule” is a baseline rule for morality that is “golden” because it is a common moral rule across many faith traditions besides Christianity.

It is so simple that children can grasp it and often appeal to this rule:

“How would you like it if I did that to you?!”

This is not difficult. It is basic ethics. And it is baseline human decency NOT to commit adultery.

Yet, some people are not willing to live by the Golden Rule. They are unwilling or incapable of following this principle lived out by young children around the world.

And that is sad.

Yet those who are the victims of the adulterous party can take heart. The Bible is clear about committing adultery falling under the Golden Rule as prohibited behavior.

Since committing adultery falls under prohibited behavior in the Golden Rule, that also means it is prohibited by a majority of the world’s ethical codes. We are not alone in seeing adultery as horribly wrong!
