For the word of God is alive and powerful. It is sharper than the sharpest two-edged sword, cutting between soul and spirit, between joint and marrow. It exposes our innermost thoughts and desires.
-Hebrews 4:12, NLT
Sometimes a cheater still has enough of a conscience that confrontation with Bible texts convicts them. It “burns” or “cuts,” if you will.
Now, this conviction will NOT likely turn into repentance. They are the sort that project the “bad feelings” onto their faithful partner as the cause. Conviction does not feel good, after all.
Their reaction to conviction is foolish. Still, foolish decisions and behavior is what makes them cheaters.
If they had ears to hear, they would understand that God’s word is doing its work. It is convicting them of their sins and calling them to repentance. But cheaters often do not have ears to hear…
Instead, cheaters slander the faithful spouse or friend calling them back from the brink of their own spiritual demise (see Hebrews 10:26-27).
The cheater calls the faithful spouse “manipulative” or “abusive” for daring to mention Scripture that clearly denounce adultery. It seems like the last thing that they want to admit is their open rebellion against God. Rather, they despise the faithful spouse for exposing them to this naked truth.
They want the faithful spouse to shut up and accept that the faithful spouse is the problem. The last thing the cheater wants is to look into their own dark, sin-filled heart. Scripture rips through their paper-thin “justifications” for their adultery.
Scripture puts a spotlight on the darkness of our hearts. Many cheaters cannot stand the light (see John 3:20).
