Cannot Repent

For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, so that each of us may receive what is due us for the things done while in the body, whether good or bad.

-2 Corinthians 5:10, NIV

You cannot repent of sin that is not yours!

We are responsible for our own sin, not another’s. This is important as it includes the sins of our (ex) spouse as well. We do not answer for those sins as we will not be held responsible before God for them (see 2 Cor. 5:10).

Did you cheat on your spouse?

No. Then you are not accountable for that sin or its consequences (like divorce–see Mt 19:9). There is not a part to own. Period.

You do not share in the marriage’s demise when infidelity has taken place. That sin alone is enough in God’s eyes for the marriage to be over (see Deut. 22:22). That means you are not responsible for the divorce even if you initiated the paperwork.

The Cheater’s sin of adultery ended the marriage.

They are alive as we no longer utilize the death penalty to handle this sin as was the case in the Old Testament (see, again, Deut. 22:22). The marriage was ended by ONE instance of adultery via the death penalty back then. Mercy is that the Cheater gets to live; NOT that the marriage continues with their abuse victim–i.e. the faithful spouse.

Faithful spouses cannot repent of sins that is not theirs:

We cannot repent of the infidelity.

And we cannot repent of a divorce–that isn’t sin for us.*

_______

*If your Cheater initiated the divorce–aka abandoning the faithful spouse (and family), they are compounding their sins by doing so. Such a divorce IS a sin for them!
