He took my sins and my sorrows,
He made them His very own;
He bore the burden to Calvary,
And suffered and died alone.-“I Stand Amazed in the Presence” by Charles Gabriel
I love this old hymn from 1905. This verse in particular speaks comforting truths to me.
What I love about this verse is how empathetic it is. We hear of Christ not only taking our sin–which is important–but also the pain and suffering we experience in this world–i.e. our “sorrow.”
On this Good Friday, we are reminded that Jesus also knows what it is to suffer alone.
Just knowing that gave me comfort. The knowledge–strangely enough–meant to me that I never suffer alone. Jesus knows how it feels and relates to my pain.
He took my sorrow and made it his own.
What a comforting thought!
