Contrasting Lay Christian Counselors

Plans go wrong for lack of advice; many advisers bring success.

-Proverbs 15:22, NLT

I had contrasting experiences with two Christian couples who offered me counsel during and after my divorce.

The first couple were a disaster for my marriage. They picked sides and pushed my Cheater towards divorce. The contempt towards me in those sessions were quite evident.

Now, the second couple were prophetically gifted and provided incredible help in my healing journey. They accelerated that process for me, and I will forever be grateful to them.

Both were lay counselors. They weren’t licensed therapists. (I had mixed results with the later group as well.)

My point is that we have to be discerning on whom we find for help and counsel. It is not as simple as rejecting all Christian, lay help or only going for licensed therapists (as those therapists could be cheaters themselves. without professional consequences).

When looking for someone, I would encourage you to seek out someone who understands trauma and views adultery as abuse. Those are good starting points in finding someone who is equipped to help.
