Children’s children are the crown of old men; and the glory of children are their fathers.
-Proverbs 17:6, KJV
When my world fell apart, my dad was there (along with my mother) to support me and provide a place to land as I put the pieces of my shattered life back together.
I spent countless hours talking with him on the phone and later in person. My father is a man of few words, but he is an excellent listener. I don’t know what I would have done without such support.
He bore the pain of watching his son go through a divorce and the betrayal of discovering his (now) ex-wife was unfaithful. In fact, I remember my father telling me this was harder on him than the death of his own mother.
He didn’t have to engage with me and face those awful feelings. But he did. My dad was there for me on so many levels.
I am so grateful for my dad!
In this world where fathers are bashed or viewed as “the problem,” this Father’s Day I want to hold up the example of my dad as praiseworthy. I thank God for my Dad.
How about you? Do you have a father or father-figure who was there for you during this difficult time? This Father’s Day is a good day to thank them.
