Heritage of Refutation

…no weapon forged against you will prevail,
and you will refute every tongue that accuses you.
This is the heritage of the servants of the Lord…

-Isaiah 54:17a, NIV

I find this verse instructive about how we engage in spiritual warfare.

We are not passive participants. God calls us to speak truth, which has the power to refute the lies of the Enemy.

To be sure, the Enemy is not a human one. We know this from other Scripture (see Ephesians 6:12).

Sometimes, we may “only” be speaking the truth to ourselves to set ourselves free from the lies. Yet the refutation is still very necessary!

Why does such Isaiah characterize such refutation as the “heritage” for God’s people?

I believe Isaiah is speaking about the fact that we are rulers in God’s kingdom. Refutation of lies is how we extend and stand in the authority God has given to us.

Our heritage is to rule; this is how we do that in this present age.
