“I was unfaithful in my marriage, the most important relationship in my life and held accountable for that. This failure is on me, and me alone and I take full responsibility for my actions.”
-Carl Lentz on his Instagram
Recently, Carl Lentz was fired from his position as pastor of Hillsong Church on the East Coast due to “moral failures” (see here).
For those unfamiliar with his name, Carl Lentz is a famous celebrity pastor who was once very close to Justin Bieber even baptizing him in an NBA star’s bathtub (see here).
Sadly, his fall from the pastorate is a story all too common. Another celebrity pastor succumbs to moral failings.
That said, I am somewhat impressed with his public statement.
He doesn’t blame his wife or others in that statement. So, I see hope in that. Repenting begins with taking full responsibility and working to restore trust that has been violated. Time will tell if this is genuine or image management.
I am also impressed the leadership of Hillsong took action to address this biblically in terminating Lentz’s employment.
Now, I do think they could have been more explicit about the sin. However, they did take action. This is more than some churches and denominations do with cheating pastors.
