Bless those who persecute you; bless and do not curse.
-Romans 12:14, NIV
Pray for your abuser? Pray for your cheater?
This is common advice given in Christian circles. I am not completely sure that it is good advice. That is just my opinion.
I find the verse above has a context of speaking about those attacking us over our faith. That is usually NOT the situation with a cheater. In fact, they might be trying to play as if THEY are the great exemplar of Christianity.
That said, I do find I can pray one prayer of blessing genuinely:
“Lord, please bless CHEATER with spiritual well-being. Amen.”
Spiritual well-being only happens when repentance occurs. Such repentance is necessary for right relationship with God.
Thus, I find this prayer does not minimize or “rug sweep” abuse and sin. Plus, it genuinely gives those sins into God’s hands to handle. This is no “bitter” prayer.
Thanks for sharing this post. It’s good to see an honest and more balanced view of how to deal with cheating in the church.
