For you are the children of your father the devil, and you love to do the evil things he does…. When he lies, it is consistent with his character; for he is a liar and the father of lies.
-John 8:44a,c, NLT
When you find someone who lies with ease, you are finding someone who should have reason to worry spiritually.
This verse from John is an indicator of who is the true father of habitual liars. It is not Jesus’ Father.
Cheaters sometimes are so good at lying that they do not have any “tells.” They speak the “language” of lies with fluidity. That is not a good thing, for them.
Another interesting thing about this passage is how Jesus was speaking about religious people here!
A cheater who claims to follow Jesus and lies is just like the religious people Jesus addresses here. Claiming Jesus is not enough. One needs to walk in light and truth.
In other words, God demands integrity.
Plus, God is not naive. He knows people will say one thing and do another. He is not surprised the religious people prefer legitimacy that gives them while acting on behalf of the demonic. So, he warns us here of that dynamic.
Watch out when you encounter a religious liar! Their words and actions are declaring whom they really serve.
