When I was a child, I spake as a child, I understood as a child, I thought as a child: but when I became a man, I put away childish things.
-I Corinthians 13:11, KJV
Something about the infidelity and divorce surviving experience seems to encourage other Christians to see themselves as our parents.
This was one of the most infuriating thing about going through a divorce. It is hard enough sorting out one’s own wishes and feelings.
Then you add to this confusing time Christian leaders who claim complete benevolence while they pursue their own agenda in attempting to control YOUR life!
Faithful spouses have just experienced the ultimate disrespect in having a spouse cheat on them. We don’t need to experience more disrespect of our adulthood by so called Christian “helpers.”
This sort of treatment is part of the reason I left my former denomination. They did not treat me as an adult and respect my own assessment of my well-being.
I am a man, not a child. And I expect to be treated accordingly!
In the end, I am better off today. I found a denominational home where they love Jesus and respect me as an adult.
May you, too, find Christians who respect your agency and autonomy as an adult in relationship with Holy Spirit!
