A very large crowd spread their cloaks on the road, while others cut branches from the trees and spread them on the road.
-Matthew 21:8, NIV
Whenever I think about Palm Sunday (this coming Sunday), my mind goes to thoughts about expectations regarding God.
Here the Jewish people thought they had God’s plan for deliverance all figured out. Jesus would come into Jerusalem and take out their oppressors, the Romans.
This did not happen.
Jesus did not deliver them that week from Roman rule. In fact, the week ended with his own death by the Roman’s most cruel and degrading means of execution–i.e. crucifixion.
Yet Jesus delivered His people still.
They just dreamed too small. Their vision of deliverance was from a Roman Empire. Jesus came to deliver them from a greater enemy: Death.
I wonder how many times we are like the Jews in Jesus’ day? Do we fixate on a certain way of deliverance only to miss the greater work God is doing? Are our dreams too small, too?
Sometimes it is a gift not having it all “figured out.” That means you are ready and potentially able to see God figure it out.
