“She’s just a friend.”
“It was only one kiss.”
“I was drunk; it doesn’t mean anything.”
Cheaters minimize.
It is what they do. In fact, I think that is what we all do as sinners to some extent. We struggle to face the reality of our sins.
The Enemy often uses this strategy to keep us ensnared in our sins. We keep downplaying the sin so that we do not have to repent facing the ugly truth of what we did. It is part of our fallen nature, the flesh, so to speak.
If we claim we have not sinned, we are calling God a liar and showing that his word has no place in our hearts.
-I John 1:10, NLT
Another dynamic in this with Cheaters is how they will often only “confess” what you have caught them doing. They will not volunteer information. It is part of the power play of keeping you in the darkness. After all, “knowledge is power” as the saying goes.
The minimizing works with the withholding of information to create a truly toxic concoction. It is probably safe to assume it is worse than you know. This is another sad reality of dealing with a lying Cheater.
