Unexpected joys

May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.

-Romans 15:13, NIV

Years ago, I would have never imagined I would become a bird owner. Taking care of parrots was NOT on my radar.

Then I married Mrs. DM. Those first few years owning a parrot was still not on my radar. In fact, I joked with Munchkin about finding a way to bring home a cat.

About the time we bought our first house together, Mrs. DM started volunteering at a parrot rescue. That was the camel’s nose under the tent so to speak.

A few months later, we ended up taking home our first parrots. A bonded pair of green cheek conures, Trip and Kirk.

That was just the beginning…

Our flock soon expanded to five parrots with Loki, my bird buddy, coming next. (He is the pumpkin-headed parrot at the top of this post.)

I cannot imagine our lives without our bird buds these days. They bring unexpected joys and moments of laughter into our lives.

One of those joyous things I could never have predicted was how fun it is having pets that can talk and laugh.

Loki will actually laugh with me. He follows along with Sit Coms on TV and will laugh at appropriate times with it. I find this both amusing and heart-warming.

We are social creatures, like parrots, and I love how they continue to teach me lessons about life through their antics.

There is just something about having someone laugh with you that feeds the soul–even if, that someone is a parrot 😉
