Unjust! Laura Lentz reportedly fired along with cheater husband Carl Lentz.

Now, unnamed sources tell the Sun that Laura was let go by Hillsong, reportedly because “if a married couple both work at the church and one of them is terminated, they both will be fired immediately.”

-“Carl Lentz’s wife, Laura, reportedly fired from Hillsong amid scandal” by Lauren Steussy

This is unjust.

The husband cheats, and insult is added to injury with the faithful spouse losing their employment along with the cheater. If true, this is a very cruel and unjust move by Hillsong, in my opinion.

Carl Lentz loses his employment over moral failure, and the church also takes out his wife’s employment (allegedly).

What message does that send to the world?

What message does that send to the congregants?

What message does that send the Lentz kids?

I wish I could say this surprises me. However, I know of more than one case where the faithful spouse is the pastor, and the church fires him or her.

It is unjust.

Such firings send the signal that cheating is partly the other spouse’s fault. This is a lie. We are only answerable to God for our own sin (see 2 Corinthians 5:10).

It adds trauma to an already traumatic time. Secular companies treat employees with more compassion than this!

This is bad theology and bad spiritual care. The Church ought to do better by faithful spouses than this. If true, Hillsong should be ashamed of their treatment of Pastor Laura Lentz.

The evangelical church needs to do better by faithful spouses who also happen to be clergy!
