Therefore, just as sin entered the world through one man, and death through sin, and in this way death came to all people, because all sinned….
-Romans 5:12, NIV
We still have cemeteries.
In fact, I have one less than a mile from my house. It is a pretty full one at that. We still have cemeteries. They are everywhere.
You see, people still die and need to be buried. This is the natural process for all of us. Hence, we need cemeteries for all those bodies and ashes.
Why am I harping on this?
I think there is a lesson to learn from this as it comes to our theology of divorce.
Death is a consequence of sin. It was never God’s intention for humans to die. However, we DO die. That is the natural progression of things.
Sometimes, God intervenes miraculous and raises someone from the dead. However, this is not common place. We still have cemeteries.
These ideas apply to divorce, too. God never intended marriages to end before death. However, some people choose the sin of marital infidelity over their marriage. Death of the marriage–i.e. divorce–is a natural consequence of this sin.
Can marriages be miraculously resurrected after adultery? Sure. This is true just as God can raise people from the dead. Yet…
We still have cemeteries.
So, I submit to you. We will still have divorce. It is no more a failure of faith or a sin that this is true any more than it is a failure of faith or sin that we have cemeteries.
I love this analogy, thanks DM!
