“Well, you MUST HAVE known.”

“Well, you MUST HAVE known he was cheating on you.”

-Christian “friend”

This sort of response to infidelity discovery is odd to me. Whether we had an idea or not, that does not change the wrongness of the cheater committing adultery and lying about it.

Does the embezzler get a pass if his victim has a suspicion that she is being stolen from?

I am confused.

Does it really matter whether or not a faithful spouse had suspicions or “knew” about the cheater’s nefarious activity?

I don’t think so.

This knowledge does not change God’s condemnation of the cheater’s sins (see Exodus 20:14). It does not make adultery less of a sin. And it does not make the faithful spouse responsible for the cheater’s sins (see 2 Corinthians 5:10).

A good pastor or faithful Christian understands this. They do not try to deflect blame onto the faithful spouse by suggesting complicity in being “robbed” by their cheater.
