They dress the wound of my people as though it were not serious. ‘Peace, peace,’ they say, when there is no peace.
-Jeremiah 6:14, NIV
A common theme I’ve noticed over the years is how mental illness seems present with cheaters. They are often highly unstable types.
Now, I am not a mental health provider and not making any diagnosis here! I want to be clear about that.
However, I am an observer.
And I have observed some cheaters are even diagnosed officially by mental health providers. This is a common theme to the stories I have heard over the years as a supporter of faithful spouses.
But having a mental illness does not excuse their cheating…
Plenty of people struggle with mental illness and do NOT cheat on their spouses or otherwise blow up their families. The difference between them and cheaters is they have character and cheaters do not.
On a spiritual level, I believe God eventually gives cheaters over to the lies they tell themselves to “justify” in their cheating to themselves. When you believe lies, you are detaching from reality for reality is based on truth. So, it ought to be to no surprise cheaters are “out of touch” with reality and exhibit unstable behavior.
