“What about their soul? You could win them back by how you respond,” says well-meaning, naive Christian.
This burden is unfair.
There is enough pressure on faithful spouses. They don’t need more spiritual shaming. Faithful spouses are Jesus. They do not save souls. Only Jesus can do this. It is spiritually unhealthy to suggest otherwise.
Just as I am not a fan of “missionary dating,” I am not a fan of “missionary reconciliation” to cheaters. That is dangerously close to attempting to play God.
In my opinion, cheaters need consequences, not coddling.
They have taken advantage of the faithful spouse via deception. To this point, they have avoided consequences for their sins. It is important that they face reality.
If they keep sinning, their spiritual future is bleak according to Scripture (see Hebrews 10:26-27).
Enabling or tolerating their sin is NOT helpful. If all they are tasting is the forbidden fruit of sin, why would they turn in this life?
